SAA Airbus A340-300 approach and landing runway 01C at Washington Dulles IAD by a brand new long range Captain on his very first training flight. This landing was a bit of a thumper but he greased his next one at night in Dakar 3 days later.

cyril nkokha Only reason I wanted to be a cop... Race around in a Cortina XR6 with siren blaring and tyres smoking. Saw a lot of that in Cape Town in the early 1980s.

@@patrickcannell2258 - many, many years ago a buddy of mine bought an ex-traffic police Cortina 3.0 S. Was that thing's engine ever 'hot'? When he opened up that Essex engine, the piston skirts were these tiny little miniskirts. Never seen anything like that before.

dagon sachs, if you listen to this video carefully, you can hear the Assistant Traffic Chief refer to him as "Saffie" (please forgive my spelling). Then later he tells person yelling on the radio at him that he is Serfontein. He is Saffie Serfontein. Would be interesting to find out what happened to him and where in the traffic department he maybe is now.

It was the Captain's first actual landing in an Airbus. The simulator does not accurately prepare one for the dynamics of an actual landing and most of us have a tendency to delay the flare to the point that the first landing is a bit of a thumper. His next landing at night in Dakar was a greaser!!
